The agreement will cover Google’s data centres, cloud platforms and offices around the world. Engie will develop and negotiate an energy portfolio with the aim of supplying Google with renewable electricity from solar and wind technologies in order to guarantee decarbonisation close to 80 percent of its German operations by 2022. The continuous supply of guaranteed carbon-free energy from solar and wind power is a first in Europe.
In total, Engie will supply Google with 140 MW of renewable electricity and will also offer a full range of energy management services, particularly in terms of residual supply, balancing, network management, etc.
The two companies first signed an electricity purchase contract in Belgium in 2019, for a period of five years. It provided for the supply of renewable energy from an offshore wind project and was followed by a similar contract, won by Engie, in the Netherlands, before concluding this zero carbon commitment in Germany.
