Nuon purchases the rights of an innovative PV technology

Nuon, the Dutch electricity, water and gas giant, has announced an agreement to purchase the production of Helianthos cells from Akzo Nobel. The cells use an innovative thin cell technology, up to 50 times thinner than a human hair. At the moment, the product is in development and improvement phase only. Nuon's ambitions are to start mass production in three years. "The goal brought by the acquisition is to achieve another milestone in solar energy" said Nuon representatives in a press release. “With this new technology solar energy can become cheaper and more accessible”.

As a flexible material, the Helianthos cells are produced and sold in rolls. Due to its light weight they can be installed on the roof without structural reinforcements. Also it can be moulded on irregular areas, such as vehicles. Nuon expects the material to "bring a significant increase in the use of solar energy”.

“Helianthos is an option for the future that will allow households and companies generate significant amounts of their energy needs in a sustainable manner”, said Mr Peter Erich, from Nuon, a company which already has an important presence in the wind industry.

“Our experience in the sustainable energy industry, together with our knowledge in the energy market and our client portfolio provide us with an excellent opportunity to take this technology to the next level”, he added.
