Isofotón to produce 5 MW of concentration cells for 2007

The Spanish PV manufacturer stated that a fraction of its production will be dedicated to concentration cells. The firm will produce around 5 MW of these cells by early 2007, according to the Malaga-based company's sources. “Our intention is to reduce the installation cost of PV solar energy to around half of its current levels”, stated Isofotón's management team. “Currently, the demand of silicon is far greater than the supply, which has led to speculation and artificially high price levels”, they added. “The only think we can do to face this situation is to obtain more kilowatts per ton of silicon”.

With the concentration technology, lenses and reflectors are incorporatied to concentrate solar light. The problem of this choice is the overheating of cells. Companies such as Spain's Guascor and Isofotón, Japan's Daido Steel-Sharp, America's Amonix, EU's Concentrix or Australia's Solar -Systems have developed solutions in this sense .

Isofotón's announcement comes at the same time as the financing for the creation of Spain's Solar Energy Institute has been achieved; the institute aims, as a first step, to install a demonstration plant with concentration cells (Energias Renovables N1 25 bulletin). The plant will have an installed capacity of 2.7 MW. The project's creator and PV guru, Mr. Antonio Luque, hopes that Isofotón takes part in the project.
