Elecnor to build 20 MW of Solar PV in Cáceres

Elecnor, a Spanish engineering firm, has announced its plans to build a 20 MW solar PV plant near Trujillo (Caceres, Spain), through Fotowatio Energía Solar, one of its subsidiaries. The panels will be manufactured by Atersa, one of the companies integrated in the Elecnor Group. At 150 million euros, the capacity of this facility will duplicate the world´s largest, currently a 10 MW plant in Germany.

Although Elecnor has not revealed in what phase the project is at the moment, it has informed of its plan to complete the construction of the central by the end of 2007. Besides, Elecnor has pointed out that this is just a project included in a "portfolio of advanced projects" totalling 50 MW which are expected to be completed before the end of 2008.

The solar plant, called La Magascona, will have 200 100-kilowatt facilities in order to get the top feed-in tariff for this type of plant. The facility will cover an area of 20 hectares

The facility will be made up of 120,000 PV modules provided by Atersa, a subsidiary of the Elecnor Group. The modules will be assembled on a one-axis solar tracker designed by Powerlight.

Elecnor calculates that the plant will power 20,000 homes, preventing the emission into the atmosphere of more than 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The plant construction works will employ 350 people.

Meanwhile, Elecnor –which is already one of the world´s largest wind energy operators through Enerfin, another subsidiary, has confirmed the intentions of Fotowatio to enter other renewable technologies "such as electric-thermal solar
and biofuels".
