0
The Spanish utility has just connected to the grid its first windpark in Latin America, with the Río do Fuego project entry into operation. The windpark, located in the Río Grande do Norte state, in Northeastal Brazil, has an installed capacity of 49.3 MW. The windpark, which has required an investment of 66 million euros, will be fully operational from May. Both the turbine supply and its installation and entry into operation has been carried out by Wobben Windpower, which is Brazil's commercial brand of Enercon, a German manufacturer. Wobben is also responsible for the operation & maintenance operations.

Iberdrola has inked a bilateral agreement with national utility Eletrobrás, which will purchase the electricity produced by the windpark during the first 20 years. Both this contract and the project Brazilian government to promote renewable energies in the country.

The project is part of Iberdrola's ambitions to make international its renewable energy activities and remain world leader as wind power operator. Two weeks ago Iberdrola announced a new goal to reach 10,000 MW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2011.
