The Ministry of Agriculture forecasts to double the area dedicated to rapeseed for biodiesel production

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) expects to increase the area dedicated to rapeseed in 500,000 hectares in order to use it for biodiesel production, so that the total figure would be increased from the current 490,000 hectares to almost one million, said EFE. The Ministry, which communicated its intentions to the professional organization representatives and cooperatives during a meeting of hte biofuel table at the beginning of this week, has also estimated ethanol production, which will use around 500,000 tonnes of wheat, 250,000 tonnes of barley , 50,000 tonnes of corn and some 50,000 tonnes of beet. The goal is to meet the renewable energy plan (PER).

One of the obstacles to meet the PER goals is the low sale price of cereals for energy uses: 0.1022 euros per kilo. The Ministry expects these prices to be increased.

Also, the aid per hectare, going from the current 45 euros to 70 or 75 euros per hectare. In the same way, the EU will increase the maximum area eligible for this subsidies, which will be increased from 1.5 millions to 3 millions.

The MAPA expects half of the oil used for biodiesel to be imported. From the Government they consider the search for alternative uses of agricultural products, namely aimed at producing biofuels, a priority. However, the industry thinks that “these alternatives are profitable in the medium and long term, however not in the short term”, said Mr Enrique Valencia, Head of the Beet unit in COAG, A farmer association.
